Our Blue Light Presents:

Dance Your Blues Away

Dance Your Blues Away 2018
**Applications are now open**
Following the success of last year’s Dance Your Blues Away competition, we want to make2018  even bigger and better.

In 2017 we demonstrated how the power of dance can help people with their mental health wellbeing, whether you are suffering from anxiety, PTSD or depression. Many of the contestants expressed a positive impact on their overall mood and outlook during this 6 months training ans shows.

This year we are hoping to attract more dancers from all areas of the public sector community. This can be anyone who is directly or indirectly involved with  public sector work. We are also changing the dancing format, this year the contestants can do any dance that they fancy its does not have to be strictly ballroom it can be anything you like.

Another addition is that you don’t have to dance with a partner if you don’t want to, or you can dance in a group such as a team dance. Maybe you can challenge different departments, wards or shifts to a dance off. Whatever you choose to do remember it is about having fun and doing something positive to brighten your mood and Dance Your Blues Away.

On the evening of the 23rd September, the three finalist competed in the world famous Blackpool Tower Ballroom, in front of 500 guests at the Our Blue Light Charity Ball - where our Dance Your Blues Away 2017 champion was crowned.

While you may be aware of the physical benefits of dancing, perhaps you didn’t know that it has an even more beneficial effect on your brain.

Dancing improves brain function in many ways, according to a recent article published in Psychology Today. For one, regular dancing and steady practice can help ‘train’ the brain against dizziness. But learning dance steps, going through the moves slowly and then performing them over and over, also affects cognitive learning. Both mastering a sequence of dance steps and then repeating them requires a deep level of concentration.

If you think you have two left feet consider this: dancing is something that comes naturally to human beings. We have been dancing since prehistoric times, as a form of expression, celebration, or ritual. Dancing in a social setting causes the release of endorphins – the chemical in the brain that reduces stress and pain – resulting in a feeling of well being similar to what is known as “runners’ high.”

A recent article in the AARP newsletter cites a Korean study which found that older adults who were taught to cha-cha, twice a week for six months, improved their memory and cognitive function. Meanwhile, a 2005 study by researchers with Montreal’s McGill University compared a group that took tango lessons with a group that walked for exercise. While both groups scored well on cognitive tests, the dancers performed better when multitasking.
